State caps or federal regulation: What's next for political crypto donations

Image
The industry isn’t having the best of its moments now, but the topic of campaign donations in crypto remains a relatively safe space for innovation. On Jan. 25, the Committee on Elections introduced a bill to the Kansas House of Representatives aimed at capping political donation s via crypto at $100. Regardless of the success of this legislative initiative, the state of Kanzas won’t be the first jurisdiction to target anonymous donation s. From authoritarian nations like Russia or China to electoral democracies like Ireland or Canada, one can find recent attempts to ban crypto donation s to politicians all around the globe.  The opponents of crypto may have a strong point — it’s hard to imagine a healthy democracy where large sums of untraceable money are flowing between candidates. But the problem of “dark money” and tools to dispense it around the political system existed way before pseudonymous crypto assets arrived. The industry isn’t having the best of its moments now, but ...

How the Bitcoin network can solve the pitfalls of DeFi token bridges

Image
As DeFi bleeds billions of dollars annually due to token bridge attacks, a new layer-2 solution seeks a solution from within the Bitcoin blockchain. Decentralized finance (DeFi) saw a record inflow from centralized exchanges as crypto users flocked to self-custody solutions following the FTX collapse. Over 100,000 Bitcoin (BTC) left crypto exchanges so investors could avoid third-party custody. True to the “not your keys, not your coins” mantra of Bitcoin, DeFi solves a wide array of problems associated with centralized entities. However, several reports indicate DeFi is not a fail-safe environment, as high-profile protocol exploits like Wormhole, Nomad and Ronin made headlines in 2022 for the wrong reasons. Source: Token Terminal DeFi exploiters particularly target cross-chain bridges. In fact, cross-chain bridge exploits account for more than half of all DeFi exploits since September 2020, with approximately $2.5 billion lost to these attacks. A Chainalysis report shows that token b...

Is the IMF shutting the door prematurely on Bitcoin as legal tender?

Image
Should the International Monetary Fund leave the door open for developing countries struggling with inflation? “Bitcoin was made for the Global South.” There’s been little sunlight this crypto winter, so it may seem odd to present the “Bitcoin as legal tender” argument again. That is, will or should any country — other than El Salvador and the Central African Republic (CAR), which have already done so — declare Bitcoin (BTC) an official national currency? The International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised the issue again last week in a paper putting forth nine crypto-focused policy actions that its 190 member countries should adopt. First on its list of “don’ts” was elevating crypto to “legal tender.” Or, as the multilateral lending institution’s executive board assessment stated: “Directors generally agreed that crypto assets should not be granted official currency or legal tender status in order to safeguard monetary sovereignty and stability.” Maybe it’s not fair to ask the question with...

Cardano’s Price Prediction: Will ADA Hold Support in Latest Crypto Sell-Off?

Image
Join Our Telegram channel to stay up to date on breaking news coverage Cardano (ADA) has been experiencing a bearish trend since reaching a multi-month high of $0.4213 on February 16. The past week has been particularly challenging for the digital currency, with a significant price decrease as it struggles to maintain its position amidst the current sell-off across the broader crypto markets, along with negative PR. This recent negative attention stems from allegations made against its founder Charles Hoskinson on Reddit, which could potentially impact Cardano’s reputation and price further. The controversy began with an open letter posted by a Reddit user named Demesisx, who accused Hoskinson of having alt-right sympathies and making misleading statements about Cardano’s technology. Hoskinson refuted these allegations and defended himself in a post of his own. Despite Hoskinson’s response, some investors remain concerned about the potential negative impact o...
