Bitcoin continues to face strong resistance at $31,000 but supportive macroeconomic factors could tilt the advantage in favor of the bulls. Bitcoin (BTC) bulls are again having a go at the overhead resistance of $31,000. The bullish sentiment may get a boost from the United States inflation report, which showed signs of slowing down. Economists were expecting the year-on-year consumer price index to rise 3.1% but the June print came in at 3%. The month-on-month increase of 0.2% was also less than forecast. This suggests that the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes are having the desired effect. That may limit future rate hikes by the Fed. Supported by macroeconomic conditions, institutional investors seem to be turning positive on cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin. CoinShares report published on July 10 showed inflows of $136 million into digital investment products in the past week. That brings the total inflows of three consecutive weeks to $470 million, indicating a positive outlook. D...

OPNX launches ‘oUSD’ credit currency for crypto margin trading

Image
The new “credit currency” will allow users to rely on cryptocurrencies as collateral without needing to obtain loans from other institutions. Crypto futures exchange OPNX has launched a credit currency for margin trading , according to a July 5 statement made to Cointelegraph from the exchange’s co-founder, Mark Lamb. Called “oUSD,” the currency is available in its “phase 1” iteration, meaning that users cannot receive it without depositing crypto assets into the exchange.  In a future “phase 2” version, the platform intends to make oUSD available to users who deposit crypto into on-chain contracts to allow for possible “bankruptcy remoteness,” Lamb stated. In the currency’s litepaper, oUSD is identified as a solution to three problems. First, lenders do not want to trust platforms to hold cash loans backed by crypto collateral. Second, exchanges and lending platforms don’t want to lend cash to margin traders, as this practice led to multiple bankruptcies during the 2022 bear mar...

U.S. Senator Lummis revamps efforts for crypto regulations amid SEC lawsuits

The regulatory framework will allow individuals and companies to own and trade digital assets in America. With the rapid evolution and increasing adoption of crypto currencies, the need for regulatory clarity has become paramount. U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis has said that her effort s to push for a positive regulatory framework are still in motion.  Senator Lummis garnered praise from the crypto community on Twitter as she shared her commitment to developing a regulatory framework that would facilitate digital asset ownership and trading within the United States. Her tweet serves as a reminder of the anticipated bill that was supposed to be released in April. In collaboration with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Lummis has been engaged in a bipartisan initiative to propose extensive regulations for cryptocurrencies. The upcoming legislative effort is anticipated to make significant progress in Congress this year, providing a crucial framework for the rapidly evolving digital asse...

Coinbase Derivatives Exchange’s institutional-sized contracts will be sized at 1 Bitcoin and 10 Ether. As the cryptocurrency industry faces regulatory challenges in the United States, public crypto exchange Coinbase is moving forward with its futures contracts. On June 1, Coinbase revealed its plans to introduce Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) futures contracts on June 5 through its Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated derivatives exchange. The futures contracts will be targeted toward institutional investors. According to Coinbase, the newly announced institutional-sized contracts will have a specific size of 1 Bitcoin and 10 Ethereum. This sizing is intended to enable clients to effectively manage their exposures in the market. In addition, Coinbase stated that its Derivatives Exchange will be dedicat...

Gemini considers forbearance after DCG defaults on a $630M payment

Gemini is planning to file a new motion with the court seeking the return of $1.1 billion of digital assets from DCG-owned Genesis. Troubled cryptocurrency exchange Gemini is considering a forbearance option against the Digital Currency Group (DCG), which missed a $630 million re payment last week. When a lender grants forbearance , the borrower can temporarily reduce its mortgage payment or temporarily stop making payment s. The borrower must subsequently pay the reduced or paused payment s. In its updated response, Gemini claimed that the forbearance consideration would be partly based on whether DCG will engage in good-faith negotiations on a consensual deal. If an agreement cannot be reached among the involved parties, Gemini plans to work with DCG-owned Genesis Capital to suggest terms for an amended plan of reorganization that could be advanced without DCG’s consensual participation. On May 19, Genesis also filed a motion with the bankruptcy court seeking to extend its peri...

Arbitrum airdrop-related selling subsides, but Dapp use sustains while smart money accumulates ARB

Image
The ARB airdrop followed the sell-the-news narrative, but Arbitrum's Dapp use and fundamentals remain strong and smart money continues to buy ARB tokens. The Arbitrum token airdrop led to a massive dump of ARB tokens and projects in the Arbitrum ecosystem in a “sell-the-news” type of event. However, the Ethereum Layer-2 activity remains strong, with the selling pressure of ARB tokens likely done with, making the rollup well-positioned for further growth. Arbitrum ecosystem tokens sees sell-the-news type event The Arbitrum (ARB) airdrop was announced on March 16, which caused a significant uptrend in native token prices of Arbitrum ecosystem projects like GMX), Magic , Gains Network (GNS) and Radiant Network (RDNT). The primary reason behind the pump was the ARB airdrop catalyzing the Arbitrum ecosystem’s growth. However, according to a report from An Ape’s Prologue, “this thesis was seemingly front-run,” as the price surge mainly occurred between the period of the airdrop announc...

The world must take a 'collective action' approach to regulations – suggests India’s Finance Minister

Nirmala Sitharaman hopes that finance ministers and central bank governors will be able to agree on crypto regulations in the G-20 meeting in Bengaluru later this month. India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, stated that regulation “cannot be done” by a single country, it requires “collective action,” in a recent television interview. Speaking to Rahul Joshi on CNBC-TV18 in India on Feb. 3, Sitharaman noted that while the central bank is the “authority for issuing cryptocurrency,” the rest of the digital assets created outside are “using very useful financial technologies.” Sitharaman said that India is looking at a "global" standard operating procedure (SOP) to be “agreed upon” for regulating crypto assets, ahead of India hosting the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Bengaluru later this month. She suggested that crypto regulations will only be effective if there is global consensus on them. She noted: “Regulation cannot be done by any one c...

Data shows pro Bitcoin traders want to feel bullish, but the rally to $23K wasn’t enough

Image
Bitcoin price has flashed a few bullish signals, but traders are not too keen on adding leverage longs until after the Federal Reserve shows its cards on Feb. 1. Bitcoin (BTC) price had a mixed reaction on Jan. 25 after the United States reported a 2.9% gross domestic product growth in the fourth quarter, slightly better than expected. Still, the sum of all goods and services commercialized between October and December grew less than 3.2% from the previous quarter. Albeit somewhat optimistic, another data set limiting investors' confidence was news that the U.S. Federal Reserve (FED) would revert its contractive measures anytime soon as U.S. durable goods orders jumped 5.6% in December. The indicator came in much higher than anticipated, so it could potentially mean that Interest Rates could be increased for a little longer than expected. Oil prices are also still a focus for investors, with crude WTI approaching its highest level since mid-September, currently trading at $81.50. ...

Bitcoin price strength intensifies as risk-loving traders bring volume back to the crypto market

Image
An increase in Bitcoin trading volume and positive on-chain data appear to be the primary forces behind BTC’s newfound strength. The beginning of 2023 has provided Bitcoin (BTC) with bullish indicators and the rally to a year-to-date high at $21,647 has crypto traders hopeful that the worst part of the bear market has ended. The surge effect of BTC’s bullish price action is also carrying over to Ether (ETH) and Bitcoin mining stocks. The reduction in Bitcoin Fear and Greed index to neutral is possibly driven by volume increases, Bitcoin on-chain data and BTC price decoupling from equities markets. While not all analysts believe a market bottom is in, let’s dive into the data. Trading volume and volatility return Bitcoin’s price spike has been accompanied by massive growth in trading volume. Over the last week, BTC volume has more than doubled, reaching $10.8 billion, a 114% increase over 7-days. Bitcoin trading volume. Source: Arcane Research Increased trading typically correlates to...
